Headaches and TMD
Neuromuscular Dentistry – TMJ / TMD Treatment
Neuromuscular Dentistry can help alleviate TMJ symptoms such as headaches, neck and jaw pain. Many Australians suffer from one or more of these symptoms. In a number of cases, these symptoms can actually be attributed to TMJ (temporomandibular joint syndrome), also referred to as TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). These terms are just different names for the same group of symptoms.
What Causes TMJ?
In most cases, TMJ disorders stem from having a “bad bite”. This includes under-bites and overbites i.e. your upper and lower teeth do not close together in the correct way—they are misaligned.
Misaligned teeth (and jaws) can cause face muscles into a strained position, resulting in pain throughout the face, head, neck and back. Although a person may have beautiful teeth or had orthodontics to align their teeth, the muscles and joints may not be comfortable leading to ongoing head and neck pain.
